Emergency Relief / Russia
Take me to the photos.
THE SITUATION
Most Americans realize Russia's economy, no bigger than Holland's is in
a deadly downward corkscrew. And while the west commits billions for aid,
how much of that will eventually translate into quality-of-life upgrades
for the Russian people?
Meanwhile, Russians
try to chuckle over black humor such as this joke told by a staff member
to the Mayor of Kaliningrad (formerly Leningrad ), one of Russia's largest
cities:
“Did you hear
President Yeltsin's address to the nation last night? He proclaimed
how 'We (Russia) have been standing on the edge of the cliff of the
economic crisis for so long; we finally have made the first step forward.”
WER's INVOLVEMENT
1995 to 2000, World Emergency Relief shipped over 210 containers
of food, clothing, medicines, hospital equipment, cleaning compounds and
building materials to the former Soviet Union.
In 2001, World
Emergency Relief expects to expand on its humanitarian relief
efforts. Our primary aid recipients are women and children who receive
support from non-governmental organizations and government agencies. Example
of such include: rehabilitation centers, orphanages, homeless shelters,
hospitals and clinics around Kaliningrad.
